Nicola Dietmann was called in by Not To Scale to be the production designer on their part for delivering a promo that was to be used in a brand launch for Burberry in China.
I spoke with Dietmann as we watched the launch film that had finally been allowed release by Burberry:
Burberry created a purpose-built 360m circular environment to house the launch party for their brand in Taipei. A large portion of the event entertainment was the feature length footage, projected 360 degrees around the wall of this environment. The theme of the launch was dramatic changing weather conditions.
My role was to work with the creative directing team in producing ideas and solutions as to the content of this footage, whilst adhering to Burberry's image, brief and carefully thought out preferences.
This huge undertaking resulted in a media mix, where footage combined with live action and beautifully executed animation. Therefore these three areas had to blend and work well together, with my role providing insight, advice and solutions regarding the live action. I was responsible for orchestrating, sourcing, crewing and budgeting several of the live action shoots. Yes, I made rain, storm and hail with my team!
I also benefitted enormously from this project by working alongside MPC (Moving Picture Company) and gained a unique insight into the requirements and technical aspects of postproduction animation.
You can see elements of the promo in the launch video in Nicola’s profile area.
